The significance of a robust and healthy ocean ecosystem is crucial for Fiji and its surrounding region. Not only does it support local livelihoods, but it also plays a vital role in ensuring economic sustainability and resilience against climate change.
Recently, representatives from Blue Prosperity Fiji (BPF) and National Geographic Society Pristine Seas held a workshop where they announced an upcoming targeted expedition to investigate ocean biodiversity in Fiji aboard the research vessel, R/V Argo, slated for 2025. This expedition aims to utilize advanced scientific tools and technology to survey critical yet often overlooked areas of the ocean, focusing on locations that have not been previously studied in Fiji.
In addition, Pristine Seas is set to produce a National Geographic documentary film highlighting Fiji’s ocean life and the communities that depend on it, along with publishing a comprehensive scientific report to share findings with the government, scientists, and experts.
Blue Prosperity Fiji is a government-led initiative aimed at fostering a healthy ocean, vibrant communities, and a flourishing economy in Fiji. This program integrates community input, scientific research, and traditional knowledge to manage the country’s ocean resources sustainably, with the goal of designating 30% of ocean areas as protected and supporting the management of ocean industries and fisheries.
From May to August 2023, BPF undertook Fiji’s largest coral reef assessment, involving consultations with over 100 local qoliqoli owners and communities prior to conducting surveys. During the assessment, divers collected data on marine life, coral health, and water quality across 272 coral reef habitats, observing nearly 500 fish species. Andrew Paris, BPF’s environment coordinator, noted the skill and expertise of local divers, as they contributed significantly to identifying various fish species and their cultural relevance.
The dive teams measured water quality and temperatures to evaluate reef health amid worrying signs of coral bleaching in certain areas, highlighting the impact of climate change. While challenges remain, such as overfishing in some regions, observers noted thriving, diverse marine ecosystems as a cause for optimism.
As part of its ongoing efforts, Pristine Seas will collaborate with Blue Prosperity Fiji on the 2025 expedition, leveraging their combined expertise to enrich the study of Fiji’s marine environment. The information gathered will be instrumental in guiding government policies and fisheries management decisions.
This collaborative initiative showcases the potential for science, community engagement, and dedication to conservation to foster a sustainable future for Fiji’s ocean ecosystems, reinforcing the hope that proactive measures can help protect these vital resources for generations to come.
The forthcoming expedition and further research indicate a promising path towards enhancing the understanding and preservation of Fiji’s remarkable marine biodiversity.
