Fiji’s Ocean Future: A Bold Commitment to Sustainable Maneuvers

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to the protection and sustainable management of its ocean territories through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the Blue Prosperity Fiji program. This agreement was established between the Fiji Government and the US-based Waitt Institute.

During a meeting with Ted Waitt, the founder of the institute, Rabuka acknowledged the supportive role of the Waitt Institute in enhancing Fiji’s sustainable ocean management efforts and advancing shared interests.

The MoU, signed last year, focuses on implementing the Blue Prosperity Fiji program. It aims to assist the government in three vital areas: marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries, and promoting the blue economy initiative.

Additionally, the Waitt Institute is committed to supporting Fiji in executing the 30 by 30 initiative, which seeks to designate 30 percent of Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zones as marine protected areas by the year 2030.

PM Rabuka reported significant progress has been made under the MoU, with relevant parties collaborating closely to fulfill their commitments.

In response, Mr. Waitt expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet, reinforcing his support for the implementation of the Blue Prosperity Fiji program and related initiatives.

The Blue Prosperity Fiji program emphasizes community and stakeholder involvement, scientific research, the integration of traditional knowledge, and collaboration with government entities and NGOs.

Led by the Government, the program aims to enhance long-term economic stability, improve livelihoods, strengthen communities, and protect ocean ecosystems. It is backed by various government agencies, including the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, and the Ministry of Finance.
