The Fiji Police Force is actively investigating a troubling case in which members of a foreign airline crew were reportedly robbed and sexually assaulted in separate incidents during the early hours of yesterday at a nightclub in Nadi.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, confirmed the incidents and expressed his deep concern for the victims involved. He described the events as regrettable, emphasizing that the safety and well-being of tourists and international crew members are of utmost importance.
Gavoka detailed that the two alleged incidents involved one theft and one sexual assault, affecting different crew members. Notably, a suspect known to the police for the alleged sexual assault has already been questioned in connection with the case.
Contrary to some reports by international media that suggested the crew were being ‘detained’, Gavoka clarified that the crew members are safe, in good health, and currently accommodated at a local hotel designated for their layovers. They have been advised by their headquarters to remain in the vicinity of the hotel to ensure their availability for the ongoing police investigations. The crew is expected to return home by the end of the week.
Gavoka urged international media to report responsibly and avoid sensationalism, stressing the importance of factual reporting in such sensitive situations. He acknowledged that while incidents like this can happen anywhere, they serve as a reminder for tourists to be cautious, particularly in nightclub areas and during late-night hours.
In light of this incident, it is crucial for both authorities and tourists to prioritize safety measures, fostering a secure environment for all visitors in Fiji. This unfortunate event highlights the challenges of ensuring safety in tourism hotspots, but it also opens the door for increased awareness and enhanced safety protocols that can better protect travelers in the future.
