Fiji’s Next President: A New Era Begins

The Fijian government has nominated Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Na Turaga na Tui Cakau, as the new Head of State and President of the Republic of Fiji. This decision follows the withdrawal of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, from the nomination for a second term.

In a statement released just after midnight, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that he had consulted the Parliamentary Caucus of the People’s Alliance, which has endorsed Ratu Naiqama for the presidential nomination. According to Rabuka, Turaga na Tui Cakau has agreed to accept the nomination.

The Prime Minister plans to present Ratu Naiqama’s name during a special sitting of Parliament set for next Thursday, in accordance with section 84(2) of the Constitution.

On October 17, 2024, Rabuka had written to President Ratu Wiliame, seeking his approval for a second term. However, on October 21, he received formal communication from Ratu Wiliame withdrawing his name from consideration.

Rabuka expressed gratitude to Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service as President, noting that he carried out his duties with integrity and stability, particularly during the transition following the December 2022 general election.

A traditional vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame at the end of his term, in recognition of his contributions.

The Prime Minister has urged all Fijians to collaborate with him and the Coalition Government to foster national unity and enhance social cohesion, peace, and prosperity.
