Fiji’s Newest Fast Ferry Revolutionizing Travel

Fiji’s largest and fastest ferry is set to begin operations next year. The 320-seat Yasawa Flyer III, custom-made to meet growing demand, was announced by South Sea Cruises Group Chief Executive Officer Brad Rutherford.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Hotel Industry Conference and Exhibition Fiji Investment in Tourism Summit at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, Denarau, Rutherford revealed that the investment in the ferry is valued at millions of dollars. The 30-meter long fast ferry will service routes to and from the Yasawas, enhancing support for resort partners and local communities.

“Yasawa Flyer III will also be the first fast ferry in Fiji to feature a full active ride control system, which in some vessels has been shown to reduce roll in moderate-rough seas by up to 40 percent,” Rutherford said. “Like all SSCG fast ferries, Yasawa Flyer III will be equipped with modern navigational and safety equipment and will also offer Starlink internet for reliable Wi-Fi, alongside GPS technology providing passengers with real-time trip and destination information.”

SSCG has commissioned Aus Ships Group in Brisbane to deliver the custom-designed ferry by mid-2025.

“The company is thrilled to bring to market what has involved significant design, planning, and effort over the past year,” Rutherford said. “We chose Aus Ships Group to deliver this unprecedented project for SSCG and the Yasawa people, who will greatly benefit. This investment reflects SSCG’s confidence in Fiji’s future growth and the Yasawa Islands.”

The Yasawa Flyer III will have a 33% greater capacity than its predecessor, Yasawa Flyer II, and, like all SSCG vessels, will have an accessible bow for passenger viewing.

“Hybrid and/or battery technology is not yet advanced enough to support long-distance open ocean travel at speeds of 22 knots,” Rutherford noted. SSCG has opted for the most fuel-efficient and technologically advanced machinery available to power Yasawa Flyer III.
