Fiji’s New Tourism Hub: What Impact Will It Have?

NaVualiku, part of the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The opening ceremony took place at the JKS Building, with the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, presiding over the event as the programme falls under his ministry’s oversight.

Minister Gavoka emphasized that this office symbolizes much more than just a facility; it represents a commitment to the local community where the project aims to make a significant impact. He noted the programme’s goal to not only attract more tourists to Vanua Levu but also to enhance the livelihoods of the local population. “The office will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme reach every community on this island,” he stated.

The World Bank Group’s country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, announced that the project is backed by a US$200 million financing package from the World Bank. This initiative will roll out in three phases over the next ten years as part of a comprehensive programmatic strategy.

Mocci expressed the World Bank’s dedication to supporting Fiji’s efforts to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism destination, aimed at generating jobs, particularly for women and youth, attracting domestic and foreign investment, and fostering economic growth to enhance the quality of life for Fijians in the region.

He highlighted that the new office is a vital aspect of the project, designed to expedite progress on the ground, improve collaboration, and strengthen partnerships in the northern region. Mocci also noted their pride in supporting Fiji’s developmental goals under its ‘Look North’ policy to enhance the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
