Fiji’s New Tourism Hub: What Does It Mean for Vanua Levu?

The NaVualiku initiative, part of the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu’, officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The new facility, located at the JKS Building, was inaugurated by Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, representing his ministry’s leadership of the program.

Mr. Gavoka emphasized that the office is not just a new building but signifies a commitment to making a difference in the community. The program aims to enhance tourism in Vanua Levu while improving the quality of life for its residents.

“This office will be instrumental in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku program reach all communities on the island,” he stated.

The World Bank Group’s country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, announced that the project is supported by a US$200 million funding package from the World Bank. This initiative will be rolled out in three phases over the next ten years.

Mocci pointed out that the collaboration aims to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism center, generating job opportunities, particularly for women and youth, and attracting investments to stimulate economic growth. He highlighted that the World Bank will contribute not only financial support but also global expertise to aid in the project’s execution.

“This new office is a crucial element in our efforts to accelerate outcomes on the ground and improve collaboration and partnerships in the North,” he remarked. Mocci expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development strategy under the ‘Look North’ policy, aimed at strengthening the tourism industry in Vanua Levu.
