The NaVualiku program, officially known as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ inaugurated its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The ceremony took place at the JKS Building and was led by Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, as the program falls under his ministry’s jurisdiction.
Minister Gavoka emphasized that the office signifies much more than a mere facility; it embodies the initiative’s commitment to effecting positive change in the region, developing strategies, mobilizing resources, and fostering sustainable growth. He stated that the ministry’s goal extends beyond increasing tourist numbers in Vanua Levu to enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
“The office will be pivotal in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku program reach every community on this island,” he asserted.
In a related update, Stefano Mocci, the World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, announced that the program, backed by a US$200 million financing commitment from the World Bank, will be executed in three phases over the next decade, following a programmatic approach.
Mocci expressed that the World Bank, alongside essential partners and stakeholders, is dedicated to supporting the Fijian government’s objectives of transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism destination. This initiative aims to create employment opportunities—especially for women and youth—attract both local and foreign investments, and enhance economic growth, ultimately improving the living standards of Fijians in the region.
He remarked on the value of combining financial support with global and regional expertise to ensure comprehensive implementation of the project. “The new office is a crucial part of our agenda to accelerate progress on the ground, improve coordination and foster stronger partnerships in the North,” Mocci added. He also highlighted their pride in advancing Fiji’s development focus under the ‘Look North’ policy to strengthen the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
