Fiji’s New Strategy: Securing Migrant Workers’ Future

Fiji is set to collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to create a National Labour Mobility Framework and Strategy. During a recent Parliament session, Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh discussed the government’s memorandum of understanding with the IOM aimed at developing this national strategy.

Minister Singh emphasized that the proposed policy will define essential approaches for managing both incoming and outgoing labour mobility. He stated that the goal of the policy is to establish a robust governance framework for labour mobility that maximizes the socio-economic benefits of migration for individuals and communities while adhering to international standards and best practices.

The MOU between the Ministry of Employment and the IOM signifies Fiji’s commitment to working together to address the challenges of labour mobility and transform these challenges into opportunities. This collaboration will also allow Fiji to access technical assistance from the IOM to protect the rights of migrant workers, conduct research, and enhance its capacity to collect labour migration data.

Funding for this initiative will be obtained from the Migration Partnership Trust Fund. Singh noted that an assessment of the country’s needs and relevant labour mobility data will be gathered as part of this initiative.
