Fiji’s New Strategy: Safeguarding Workers Abroad

Fiji is set to collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to establish the National Labour Mobility Framework and Strategy. During a recent Parliament session, Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh discussed the government’s memorandum of understanding with the IOM, aimed at developing a national strategy focused on safeguarding Fijians who migrate overseas for work.

Mr. Singh emphasized that the proposed policy will detail essential strategies for managing both incoming and outgoing labor mobility. “The goal is to ensure that Fiji has an effective labor mobility governance framework that maximizes the socio-economic benefits of migration for individuals and communities, in line with international standards and best practices,” he stated.

He highlighted that the signing of this MOU reflects their dedication to working together to overcome the challenges associated with labor mobility and to convert these challenges into opportunities. This collaboration will allow for technical assistance from the IOM to protect migrant workers’ rights, conduct essential research, and enhance the collection of labor migration data.

Funding for this initiative will be sourced from the Migration Partnership Trust Fund, and a comprehensive country needs assessment along with labor mobility data will be gathered throughout the process.
