Fiji’s authorities have recently uncovered an alarming trend in drug smuggling, revealing that illegal substances are being concealed inside used water bottles. This discovery emerged from a joint operation involving the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), the Fiji Police Force, and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) at Mua-i-Walu port and nearby carrier stands.
The operation aimed to target vessels and trade premises, exposing increasingly sophisticated methods employed by smugglers to avoid detection. Alongside the found drugs, officials also discovered undeclared cigarettes aboard a fishing vessel, indicating further breaches of customs and trade regulations.
Initial investigations suggest that certain shop owners and maritime operators may be involved, hinting at a broader network engaged in illegal trading and smuggling activities. Udit Singh, the chief executive officer of FRCS, emphasized the significance of these findings and called for heightened awareness as smugglers adapt their tactics.
Mr. Singh stated, “These results highlight illicit activities designed to evade law enforcement. We will continue to work collaboratively with our partners to ensure those involved in illegal trade are held accountable under the law.”
As the festive season approaches, the FRCS encourages the public to report any suspicious activities. They have also reminded businesses to strictly adhere to trade regulations and ensure that all goods comply with legal standards.
