Fiji’s New Security Strategy: A Collective Approach to Challenges Ahead

The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) has been introduced as a strategic framework aimed at addressing the complex challenges that threaten Fiji’s sovereignty and stability. During the launch event held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, highlighted the modern security landscape, which is increasingly affected by issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical pressures.

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized the need for Fiji to adopt an agile and proactive stance in response to these challenges. A key aspect of the NSDR is its advocacy for a comprehensive approach to security, which involves collaboration across the entire government and society. He pointed out that while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force play significant roles, it is essential for them to work in conjunction with all government agencies, civil society groups, and the private sector.

The Minister remarked, “National security is not the responsibility of a single entity—it is a shared responsibility that touches all of us.”

The review was enriched by contributions from various experts, including Professor Satish Chand, who served as Chair, alongside Associate Professor Shailendra Singh and Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, with input from NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. Data gathered from community consultations will inform the findings and recommendations of the NSDR through the involvement of both government and civil society.
