Fiji’s New Rehabilitation Centre: What to Expect?

The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, has announced the approval for the construction of a new National Rehabilitation Centre by both the Government of Fiji and Korea. This new facility will replace the outdated Tamavua Military Hospital, previously known as the Tamavua Rehabilitation Facility.

Dr. Lalabalavu stated that the Cabinet has sanctioned a subsidiary agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to move forward with the establishment of Fiji’s National Rehabilitation Centre. KOICA is set to contribute a grant-in-aid amounting to $22.2 million.

Over the past ten months, the Ministry of Health has collaborated closely with KOICA to prepare the site for the construction team’s expected arrival in January. Additionally, the Latter-day Saints Charity has expressed its intention to provide $300,000 to facilitate the temporary relocation of the rehabilitation services to Twomey Hospital during the construction period. The Government has also allocated $400,000 for the demolition and site preparation necessary for the new rehabilitation hospital.
