Fiji’s New Integrity Chief Under Fire: Controversy Unfolds

Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar expressed her shock at the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), particularly because Malimali is currently under investigation by FICAC for alleged abuse of office.

Kumar described the confirmation from the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) as both “astonishing and unethical,” questioning how they could appoint someone under investigation to lead the very organization conducting the inquiry.

She raised critical questions about whether the JSC was aware of the ongoing investigations or if they ignored them. Kumar emphasized that this decision raises serious doubts about the integrity and credibility of the appointment process.

Additionally, she warned that public trust in FICAC’s ability to fulfill its mandate impartially might be compromised, especially when its leader faces serious allegations. Kumar insisted that the public deserves transparency and accountability from those in power.

She has called for the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding how this decision was reached and why proper due diligence appears to have been overlooked in such an important appointment.

Kumar concluded by asserting that the people of Fiji deserve better and that it is crucial for those in positions of authority to act in the nation’s best interests, ensuring that institutions are led by individuals of unquestionable integrity.
