Fiji’s New Foreign Policy: Strengthening Ties with Spain and the Pacific

Fiji’s recently launched Foreign Policy White Paper aims to enhance development assistance through strengthened multilateral and bilateral relations with Pacific and international partners. This objective was highlighted by Lenora Qereqeretabua, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, during a farewell meeting with Gaël Sánchez Cano, the Chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Spain in Fiji, who is wrapping up his diplomatic term.

Qereqeretabua emphasized Fiji’s stance as outlined in the Foreign Policy White Paper and the “Ocean of Peace” initiative led by Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sitiveni Rabuka. She reiterated Fiji’s dedication to collaborating closely with Pacific development partners to achieve common goals related to economic prosperity, peace and security, and sustainable development.

In this context, the Assistant Minister expressed her eagerness to advance cooperation and deepen engagement on issues of mutual interest between Fiji and Spain. She also thanked Cano for his committed service to Fiji and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Cano praised Prime Minister Rabuka for the Ocean of Peace initiative and expressed Spain’s support for this meaningful project. He acknowledged the significance of Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, emphasizing the necessity for a clear and effective strategy to further shared priorities and goals.
