Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Fijian Cabinet has approved the creation of a Drug Rehabilitation Centre within the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS). This significant initiative is designed to provide targeted rehabilitation interventions for convicted drug offenders, ensuring they have the support needed to reform and successfully reintegrate into society.

In his statement, Rabuka emphasized the importance of aligning the centre’s rehabilitation programs with the rigorous standards established by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. This adherence ensures that the treatment would be effective and conducive to recovery.

The establishment of this centre marks a progressive shift in how the government addresses drug-related issues, moving from a punitive approach to one that prioritizes rehabilitation. This initiative acknowledges the need for restorative justice, reflecting a growing understanding of the potential for individuals to transform their lives after overcoming addiction. By providing offenders with necessary resources and support, the government aims to reduce recidivism rates, enhance public safety, and foster healthier communities.

Overall, the Drug Rehabilitation Centre represents a hopeful and proactive step forward in addressing drug abuse in Fiji, underlining the commitment to building a more inclusive society where every individual has the opportunity for a second chance.
