The recent appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan is a notable development poised to enhance the longstanding relationship between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed optimism about this diplomatic transition, highlighting that Fiji and Japan have enjoyed a warm relationship since official ties were established in 1970.
Chand currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service and will be succeeding Filimoni Waqabaca, who is returning to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju believes this new role presents opportunities for increased collaboration across various sectors including trade, tourism, and human resources development.
Japan’s standing as a global economic powerhouse offers substantial opportunities for Fiji, and Dr. Raju acknowledged the significant support Japan provides through scholarships for Fijian students and assistance during national disasters, particularly via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA’s contributions have notably supported Fiji during flooding events, showcasing the positive impact of their involvement.
Fiji also plays an important role in educational exchange, hosting Japanese students who come to enhance their English language and other academic skills. Dr. Raju is confident that Chand will effectively promote Fijian niche products such as spices, pearls, and agricultural goods in the discerning Japanese market.
The NCCI plans to invite Mr. Chand to meet its members prior to his official commencement of duties in Japan, reflecting community support for this diplomatic transition. Additionally, Dr. Raju took the opportunity to congratulate Waqabaca on his new role, conveying his belief in Waqabaca’s capability to foster economic growth at the Fiji Development Bank.
Overall, this appointment marks a hopeful chapter for Fiji’s diplomatic engagement and the strengthening of bilateral ties with Japan. With Chand’s expertise and a history of collaboration, there are promising prospects for mutual benefits and shared prosperity in the future.
