Fiji’s New Ambassador to Japan: A Controversial Transition

Peter Wise, the former permanent secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, has been appointed as Fiji’s next Ambassador to Japan. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement yesterday.

Wise will take over the role from Filimone Waqabaca, who is expected to return to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank (FDB). Wise resigned from his position as permanent secretary on September 25, citing personal reasons. However, Prime Minister Rabuka later revealed that Wise faced a sexual harassment claim that had been forwarded to the Public Service Commission (PSC). Rabuka indicated that Wise was informed about the complaint, which contributed to his decision to resign voluntarily.

Having served as permanent secretary since January 2023, Wise has held similar roles in previous administrations.
