Fiji’s New Ambassador: Controversy Surrounds Peter Wise’s Appointment

Peter Wise, the former permanent secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, has been appointed as Fiji’s new Ambassador to Japan, as confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Wise will take over from Filimone Waqabaca, who is set to return to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank (FDB).

Wise voluntarily resigned from his position as permanent secretary on September 25, citing personal reasons. However, Prime Minister Rabuka later revealed that a sexual harassment allegation against Wise had been brought to his office’s attention, which was subsequently referred to the Public Service Commission.

Rabuka mentioned that Wise was made aware of the allegation, leading to his decision to resign. Wise had been serving as permanent secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister since January 2023 and has held similar positions in previous governments.
