Fiji’s NDP: Striking a Balance Between Growth and Conservation

The National Development Plan (NDP) aims to sustainably manage Fiji’s forest resources, highlighting the role of private sector involvement. The NDP emphasizes the need to find a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.

The plan points out that the marine resources sector presents an opportunity to diversify the economy. It states that the NDP will encourage sustainable management of both offshore and inshore fishing, revise relevant legislation, and improve associated infrastructure.

Prioritizing increased private sector participation in these fields, along with aquaculture, is a key focus. The NDP also underscores the significance of land access for economic and social welfare, proposing strategies to improve land availability. This includes reassessing institutions and laws, expediting lease applications, and initiating reforms concerning iTaukei land.

Furthermore, the plan advocates for a comprehensive approach to managing mineral and groundwater resources, aiming to balance economic development with environmental conservation and social welfare.
