The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will take center stage at the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18.
The event will follow the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture.” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the visible impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, noting issues like saltwater intrusion greatly affecting both coastal areas and river systems.
This four-day event aims to bring together farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the public to address these pressing challenges. Attendees will have the chance to engage in hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and expert discussions focused on the latest advancements in climate-smart practices.
Rayalu mentioned that there will be side events allowing the public to take part in practical sessions and discussions on various topics, including soil health and smart farming techniques. He stressed the need to adopt climate-smart practices by emphasizing traditional crops that have proven resilient over generations.
In addition to crop-related initiatives, the National Agriculture Show will present new livestock breeds and showcase techniques in animal health and production. Visitors can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other innovative livestock practices, with opportunities for farmers to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.
The show will also feature a “Farmers’ Village,” where local farmers can display their produce and value-added products, complemented by interactive exhibits and educational activities suitable for all ages.
Rayalu encouraged farmers, students, and the general public to participate in the 2024 Agriculture Show, emphasizing the significance of celebrating innovations in agriculture and striving for a more sustainable and productive industry.
