The Fiji Performing Rights Association (FPRA) has awarded a cheque of $3,600 to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti, honoring her late father, composer Yaminiasi Gaunavou, for his song “Era Bini Tu.” This recognition comes after a request from the Antigua and Barbuda government for permission to perform the song at the International SIDS (Small Island Developing States) conference.
FPRA chairman Eremasi Tamanisau explained that the association was informed by the Foreign Affairs Ministry about the request involving the youth orchestra. While the song was performed by Kabani, an Australian-based band composed of Fijian musicians, Tamanisau emphasized that the late Yaminiasi Gaunavou, a member of FPRA, was the original composer. The song is registered under FPRA, which manages the copyright and licensing for works by its members.
For the conference, the synchronisation rights fee for audiovisual presentations was set at $1,000 for every 30 seconds used. The song appeared in a medley for a total of 31 seconds, resulting in the government of Antigua and Barbuda paying $2,000 USD (approximately FJ$4,403.35). As per standard practice, the FPRA retained 10 percent for administrative costs, with the remainder directed to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti.
Expressing gratitude, Ms. Gaunavou-Uluiviti acknowledged the FPRA’s role in preserving her father’s musical legacy and promoting his work globally. “It’s an honor to receive this cheque on behalf of my late father,” she stated, highlighting the worldwide recognition of his music and expressing hope for inspiring young composers.
This event not only serves as a tribute to Yaminiasi Gaunavou’s contributions to music but also fosters motivation for the next generation of artists, encouraging them to continue creating and sharing their works on international platforms.
