The Fiji Performing Rights Association (FPRA) has awarded a cheque of $3,600 to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti, the daughter of the late composer Yaminiasi Gaunavou, to honor his song “Era Bini Tu.” FPRA chairman Eremasi Tamanisau revealed that the association was approached by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning a request from Antigua and Barbuda, which sought permission for their youth orchestra to perform the song at the upcoming International SIDS (Small Island Developing States) conference.
Tamanisau explained that while the song had previously been performed by the Australia-based Fijian band Kabani, the original composer, Yaminiasi Gaunavou, was an FPRA member, and the song is registered with the association, which manages its copyright. Mr. Gaunavou had assigned his rights to Fisher, allowing FPRA to oversee and license all uses of his works, including “Era Bini Tu.”
The song was intended to be featured in a medley at the conference, which will be streamed live on UN TV. FPRA determined that the synchronization rights fee for audiovisual presentations was $1,000 for every 30 seconds or part of it. The song was incorporated into a 31-second medley, leading the government of Antigua and Barbuda to pay $2,000, roughly equivalent to FJD 4,403.35. As per standard procedure, FPRA retained 10% of the fee for administrative costs, passing the rest directly to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti.
Expressing gratitude, Ms. Gaunavou-Uluiviti thanked FPRA for ensuring her father’s legacy endures and that his music is recognized worldwide. She conveyed her gratitude by stating, “It’s an honor to receive this cheque on behalf of my late father. Now, the songs are known globally, and this serves as motivation for young composers.”
This gesture not only highlights the importance of copyright management in supporting artists’ families but also serves as an inspiration to emerging musicians, showcasing how their creativity may flourish on a global platform. It reinforces the notion that one’s artistic contributions can leave a lasting legacy, motivating future generations to pursue their passions in music and beyond.
