During the festivities in Suva, Fiji’s President Wiliame Kotonivere expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese farming community. He acknowledged their vital role in contributing to the nation’s food supply, stating, “They have been instrumental in farming our everyday food crops, ensuring that our families have a choice of locally grown vegetables.” He further recognized their efforts in boosting Fiji’s agricultural exports.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated with enthusiasm by the Chinese community in Fiji and abroad, marks the harvest season and serves as a time for family gatherings, thanksgiving, and the sharing of joy. Mr. Kotonivere noted that the festival reflects values such as unity, family, and love, reminding everyone of their significance in personal and community life.

“The spirit of the festival symbolizes harmony and completeness, reflecting the unity and strength of our diverse society here in Fiji,” he remarked. The Chinese community has played an essential role in Fiji’s multicultural identity, contributing to the nation’s development and enriching its cultural fabric.

“Your traditions, values, and hard work have helped shape Fiji into the vibrant and inclusive nation it is today,” he said, acknowledging the unparalleled natural beauty of the islands that provide a picturesque setting for such celebrations. He urged everyone to appreciate and protect the environment for future generations.

Mr. Kotonivere emphasized the importance of unity and mutual respect, particularly during challenging times, advocating for support among all communities to celebrate the diversity that strengthens Fiji. The Chinese community is also looking forward to celebrating China’s National Day, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
