Fiji’s Minister Highlights Climate Urgency at Global Green Growth Summit

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, attended the 13th Assembly and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Week in Seoul this week, where he met with GGGI Director General Frank Rijsberman to acknowledge the organization’s technical assistance to Fiji.

During the event, Minister Tuisawau participated in two high-level ministerial panels that addressed the challenges faced by Pacific Small Island Developing States due to climate change, inequality, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He underscored the significance of climate finance and the urgent need for innovative financing solutions to support infrastructure and community-level projects in Fiji. In his speech, he pointed out Fiji’s susceptibility to climate change and advocated for inclusive climate finance efforts to ensure that no one is left behind.

The Minister also emphasized the role of renewable energy in rural electrification, commending the contributions of development partners. He reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to collaborating with GGGI and encouraged its continued involvement in the South Pacific region.

Furthermore, Minister Tuisawau highlighted the importance of COP29 as a pivotal opportunity for securing a Loss and Damage Fund to assist vulnerable nations like Fiji.
