Fiji’s Military Struggles: A Journey Toward Reconciliation

The 2000 mutiny caused significant divisions within the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), and Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai acknowledges that the security force remains fragmented. In a recent interview on The Lens@177, he addressed the ongoing challenges of achieving unity within the military, stating, “If you are looking for a 100 percent, then I can’t do that. We are still working on that.”

Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of the RFMF’s reconciliation program, noting that the fallout from the 2000 incident has left lasting divisions that they continue to address. He expressed concern over the implications of a divided military, stating, “The last thing any military commander will want is divided troops.”

He reflected on the long-term impact of the mutiny, which created rifts among friends and family members within the military. Kalouniwai underscored that fostering unity is crucial for not just the RFMF, but for the nation as a whole, as instability within the military can lead to widespread societal and economic consequences.

He stated, “A very huge insecurity that happens within the whole of Fiji affects the economy, the investment confidence of those trying to invest in Fiji, schools shut down.” The commander stressed that the wellbeing of the nation is at stake, emphasizing the necessity of overcoming military divisions for a more stable future.
