“Fiji’s Military Sets Sights on Internal Reconciliation Before National Truth Process”

The Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is prioritizing internal reconciliation before engaging in the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process. Speaking to the media at Albert Park in Suva following the Reconciliation and Restoration March, Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of completing their internal efforts to reconcile soldiers, families, and communities affected by previous military coups.

“We have been invited to participate in the National Truth and Reconciliation process, but I believe we need to finish our internal process first,” he stated. He expressed concerns about rushing into the national reconciliation without addressing the existing challenges within the military.

Major General Kalouniwai highlighted the significance of the RFMF finalizing its internal reconciliation to foster trust and confidence among the public, which would encourage individuals to share their experiences during the reconciliation efforts.

He noted that this internal process is intended to prepare personnel for broader national discussions. “We hope that by focusing on our internal process first, it will give our officers the confidence they need when they share their stories on a national stage. It’s essential that they are aware of the limitations and constraints they may encounter in recounting their experiences since 1987,” he added.
