The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is set to launch Phase 2 of its reconciliation and restoration program early next year, focusing on community engagement and outreach. This phase aims to promote reconciliation efforts in communities that have experienced the impacts of past coups.
RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai emphasized the significance of this phase in rebuilding trust between the military and the Fijian people. He stated, “Phase 2 will be vital for RFMF as we visit communities and engage in dialogue to hear their survival stories and foster institutional reconciliation.”
Kalouniwai noted that this initiative provides a critical opportunity for the institution to ‘heal’ and ask for genuine apologies from the communities affected by its past actions. By actively participating in these conversations, RFMF seeks to strengthen its relationship with the people of Fiji.
This initiative signals a proactive approach by the RFMF, promoting healing and unity in Fiji. It demonstrates the military’s commitment to acknowledging its past and striving for a more harmonious future with the communities it serves.
In summary, the RFMF’s upcoming engagement with the communities marks a hopeful step towards reconciliation, transparency, and rebuilding trust. Such efforts could pave the way for a more inclusive and united Fiji, fostering understanding and cooperation among all citizens.
