Fiji’s Military Reconciliation: A Church’s Endorsement Sparks Hope

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has shown its support for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative is designed to promote healing and strengthen unity within both the military and the wider community, highlighting a commitment to collective development and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, underscored the significance of this programme. “We are backing it, especially in light of the military’s current initiatives. They presented the programme to the President and me, and we had discussions about its progress,” Reverend Lasawa stated.

He also commended the government for its initiative to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are in favor of the truth and reconciliation approach that the government is pursuing, and we have assigned one of our representatives to participate,” he said.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is engaging with various stakeholders, including civil society leaders, faith organizations, political parties, and media representatives, to improve the draft legal framework.

This Committee, led by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, aims to develop the legal, governance, and financial structures necessary for the Commission. The chair of the committee will report directly to the Prime Minister.
