Fiji’s Military Initiative Gains Church Support: A Step Towards National Healing?

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has officially endorsed the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative is aimed at promoting healing and unity within both the military and the wider community, reflecting a dedication to cooperative growth and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of the programme. “We are supporting it, especially considering the military’s ongoing efforts. They presented the programme to the President and me, and we had discussions about its progress,” said Reverend Lasawa. He also commended the government for its proposal of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

“We are in favor of the concept of truth and reconciliation as initiated by the government. We have appointed one of our representatives to participate,” he noted. The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is engaging with various stakeholders, including leaders from civil society, faith-based organizations, political parties, and media, to refine the draft legal framework.

Led by Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, the Committee’s goal is to establish a comprehensive legal, governance, and financial framework for the Commission. The committee chair will provide updates directly to the Prime Minister.
