The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has expressed its full endorsement of the recently finalized National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), highlighting its commitment to principles of transparency, accountability, and cooperation in establishing a robust security framework for the nation.

Major General Jone Kalouniwai, the RFMF Commander, stated that the review is indicative of the government’s resolve to evolve Fiji’s security infrastructure in response to emerging challenges such as climate change, transnational crime, and shifting regional geopolitical dynamics. He emphasized that the recommendations from the NSDR advocate for a proactive and people-centric approach to national security, and the RFMF is poised to align its strategic objectives with this vision.

The RFMF’s commitment to enhancing safety, security, and the well-being of all Fijians was reiterated, with a strong emphasis on upholding human rights and promoting democratic governance. Key areas of focus from the review include:

– **Strengthening National Resilience to Climate Change:** The RFMF will persist in providing humanitarian assistance and disaster response in acknowledgment of the critical security challenges posed by climate-related threats.

– **Enhancing Public Trust and Accountability:** The RFMF is dedicated to fostering public trust and engaging with civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). By promoting transparency and public engagement, the RFMF aims to fill previous trust gaps and show accountability in its actions.

– **Supporting Human Rights and Civilian Oversight:** Adhering to the NSDR’s recommendations for enhanced democratic accountability, the RFMF will back initiatives for civilian oversight and ensure that its personnel undergo regular training focused on human rights and community-centered service.

As the implementation of the NSDR moves forward, the RFMF plans to actively engage in developing the upcoming National Security Strategy (NSS) and cooperate with various government entities to uphold Fiji’s security, prosperity, and sovereignty.

The Commander affirmed the RFMF’s unwavering dedication to serving the people of Fiji with integrity, professionalism, and respect. He concluded by expressing confidence that the NSDR recommendations will bolster national unity and resilience, fostering a secure environment that supports Fiji’s development while promoting peace throughout the Pacific region.

This initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach by Fiji, focusing on integrating security with community engagement and environmental considerations—an essential step in ensuring the welfare and safety of both current and future generations.
