The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has expressed its support for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative is designed to promote healing and strengthen unity within the military and the wider community, reflecting a dedication to collective development and national advancement.
Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of this programme. “We are backing it, especially in light of the military’s ongoing efforts. They shared the programme details with the President and me, and we had the opportunity to discuss updates,” stated Reverend Lasawa.
He also commended the government for its initiative in establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We support the concept of truth and reconciliation. Regarding the government’s efforts, we have appointed one of our representatives,” he added.
The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is currently engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including civil society leaders, faith groups, political parties, and media organizations, to refine the draft legal framework.
Chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, the Committee is tasked with developing the necessary legal, governance, and financial structures for the Commission. The chair will provide direct reports to the Prime Minister.
