Fiji’s Military Considers Reintegrating Soldiers from 2000 Coup

Personnel dismissed following the military coup in 2000 may soon be reinstated by the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai has stated that the military is contemplating this move as part of the broader reconciliation efforts.

During the announcement, Major Kalouniwai emphasized that integrating affected soldiers back into the RFMF is an essential aspect of the reconciliation process. He reflected on the situation during the coup, noting that some young soldiers found themselves in difficult circumstances and ended up incarcerated with sentences ranging from six to eight years.

The reconciliation discussions held in Vanua Levu addressed these issues, considering that some of these individuals are still relatively young, with many just over 40 years old. The military is focusing on reintegrating those under the age of 55 back into the organization as a form of restitution.

In addition to this initiative, Major Kalouniwai highlighted the RFMF’s commitment to supporting families and loved ones affected by the events of the coup, reinforcing the military’s dedication to completing the reconciliation process.
