Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), has emphasized the military’s role in remaining independent from the ongoing political turmoil in the government. His remarks come in light of recent tensions sparked by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who publicly criticized some of his cabinet ministers for advocating the creation of a new political party.
These developments have drawn significant media attention, particularly surrounding issues of governance, accountability, and the appointment of Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali, who was being investigated at the time of her selection.
In response to these political dynamics, Major-General Kalouniwai stated, “That’s politics, why do we have to be concerned? We’re living in a democratic country today; it’s part of democracy, there is always a position.” His consistent commitment to a neutral stance signifies the military’s desire to avoid involvement in political disputes.
This situation highlights the importance of political stability and governance in Fiji, emphasizing that while challenges exist, the military is committed to allowing democratic processes to unfold. It reflects hope that, despite current controversies, a resolution may be sought through democratic dialogue and accountability.
Overall, while political divides may create uncertainty, the emphasis on democratic principles suggests a path toward potential reconciliation and growth.
