Fiji’s Military and Church Unite for Healing Initiative

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has expressed its support for the Reconciliation and Restoration Programme initiated by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This program seeks to promote healing and strengthen unity within the military and throughout the community, highlighting a shared commitment to collective development and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, stressed the significance of this initiative. “We are backing it, especially in light of the military’s ongoing efforts. They presented the program to the President and myself, and we engaged in discussions about its progress,” he stated.

Reverend Lasawa also commended the government for introducing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are in favor of the concept of truth and reconciliation. We have appointed one of our representatives to participate in the government’s initiative,” he added.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is currently engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including civil society leaders, faith-based groups, political parties, and media organizations, to refine the proposed legal framework for the commission.

The committee, led by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, aims to establish a comprehensive legal, governance, and financial structure for the commission. The committee chair will report directly to the Prime Minister.
