The President of the Methodist Church of Fiji, Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, emphasized the need for the Church to enhance its role as a moral compass for the nation and act as responsible citizens. During the annual conference taking place in Suva, Rev. Turagavou called for serious introspection regarding the ongoing social issues affecting the Church.
He raised critical questions regarding the decline in church membership, the increased vocalization of congregation members about poor leadership and ethical dilemmas, and the reasons for disaffiliation from the Methodist group. He pointed out concerns such as the Church’s struggles with excessive kava consumption and smoking among its members, as well as the lack of effective measures to assess immoral behavior and misconduct within its leadership. Rev. Turagavou urged the need for a visionary mindset to elevate the Church’s standing and restore its image.
Highlighting Fiji’s multifaceted challenges, he mentioned rising drug-related incidents, crime, violence, human trafficking, and issues affecting street children and homelessness. Rev. Turagavou also questioned the Church’s approach to contemporary issues, including same-sex marriage, interfaith relations, and the intersection of political and traditional matters.
He stressed that the Church must embrace its prophetic role and take responsibility for both state and national welfare. Collaboration with local communities and the government is essential to address the root causes of these pressing issues. The meeting is set to continue today.
