Fiji’s Methodist Church Cuts Ties with UMC Over LGBTQ Controversy

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma is set to end its bilateral agreement with the United Methodist Church (UMC) in the United States. Talei Qarase-Borman, president of the Santa Rosa Methodist Church board, highlighted that this agreement was established prior to the UMC’s decision to allow LGBTQ clergy and permit ministers to officiate same-sex weddings.

Qarase-Borman noted that her church disaffiliated from the UMC in May due to resolutions made at their general conference. “We have separated from the UMC and are now functioning independently under our newly registered name, Santa Rosa Methodist Church,” she stated.

During a recent conference, the topic of LGBTQ issues was discussed, and there was an emphasis on the importance of the government maintaining its resistance to LGBTQ inclusivity in Fiji. Qarase-Borman mentioned that the existing bilateral agreement with the UMC of California/Nevada prevented congregations that had left the UMC from joining the Methodist Church in Fiji.

She expressed that there is anticipation among many iTaukei church members within the UMC for a response regarding this issue. Recent discussions indicated a lack of support for LGBTQ inclusivity among the conference attendees.

“From what I understand, the bilateral agreement will be terminated, and the Methodist Church in Fiji will begin the legal process. We appreciate the Methodist Church in Fiji for clearly addressing this issue,” Qarase-Borman added. She acknowledged her personal connections within the LGBTQ community but emphasized the need for clear boundaries in this matter.
