Fiji’s Methodist Church Cuts Ties Over LGBTQ Stance

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma is set to terminate its bilateral agreement with the United Methodist Church (UMC) in the United States. Talei Qarase-Borman, president of the Santa Rosa Methodist Church board, stated that the agreement was formed prior to the UMC’s decision to permit LGBTQ clergy and allow ministers to officiate same-sex weddings.

Qarase-Borman noted that her church disassociated from the UMC in May due to decisions reached during their general conference. “We have separated from the UMC and are now functioning independently under our newly-registered name, Santa Rosa Methodist Church,” she explained.

At their conference, the topic of LGBTQ rights was discussed, and there was a strong sentiment expressing the need for the Fijian government to continue opposing LGBTQ inclusivity. She expressed that the existing bilateral agreement with the UMC of California/Nevada had impeded congregations that left the UMC from joining the Methodist Church in Fiji.

“I urged the church to take a firm stance on this issue and to review the bilateral agreement, as many iTaukei church members within the UMC are waiting for a response,” she said. Discussions in recent meetings indicated a lack of support for LGBTQ inclusivity among the conference members.

“I understand that the bilateral agreement will be dissolved, and the Methodist Church in Fiji will begin the legal proceedings. We appreciate the clarity provided by the Methodist Church in Fiji regarding this matter,” Qarase-Borman said. She acknowledged her friendships within the LGBTQ community but emphasized the importance of maintaining clear boundaries on this issue.
