Fiji’s Mercy Commission Decision Sparks Outrage: Opposition MP Speaks Out

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has reported receiving numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who feel deeply saddened and let down by the recent announcement from the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.

In his statement, Lal emphasized that this decision has reopened old wounds for many who suffered significant losses—be it the loss of family members, livelihoods, businesses, or having to flee the country for their safety during those tumultuous times.

He acknowledged that the impact of the events from 2000 continues to resonate for many individuals, and expressed his solidarity with those affected, highlighting the lasting scars on both personal and national levels.

“As your representative, I must be honest—while I hear and share your concerns, this is the reality we are living in, and I do not have the authority to reverse or challenge the decision made. Please know that I deeply empathize with your pain, and while I cannot change what has happened, I will continue to represent your voices to the best of my ability in our ongoing fight for the coalition to be transparent with and accountable to every Fijian,” Lal stated.
