Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya has urged the introduction of essential legislation to establish Fiji’s emerging and potentially lucrative medical tourism sector, which could be worth billions. During a question regarding the strides made in developing medical tourism, Koya stressed the importance of legislative measures to ensure compliance within this promising industry.
He called on the government to provide incentives that would encourage the private sector to invest in medical facilities, noting the significant interest in enhancing Fiji’s healthcare offerings. Koya emphasized that Fiji is an attractive destination for reconstructive surgery, allowing patients to enjoy the tropical climate before returning home, with a particular focus on the profitable area of cosmetic surgery.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka articulated that medical tourism encompasses more than just healthcare services; it includes various niches such as health and wellness, where individuals seek spa treatments, yoga sessions, and mindfulness retreats across borders.
Gavoka underscored the necessity of improving the health infrastructure in Fiji to become a top-tier medical tourism destination that serves both tourists and locals. He highlighted ongoing investments aimed at enhancing the healthcare system and mentioned existing incentives to promote private hospital investments.
He stated that the medical investment package includes concessions and duty-free entry for specific capital equipment, plants, and machinery, which is part of a broader initiative to stimulate private sector investment in healthcare. Gavoka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing a comprehensive strategy to position Fiji as a leading regional hub for medical tourism.
