Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya is advocating for essential legislation to develop Fiji’s emerging medical tourism sector, which has the potential to become a billion-dollar industry. In a supplementary question regarding the progress of medical tourism in Fiji, Koya emphasized the need for legal frameworks to ensure compliance as the market expands.
He urged the government to provide incentives that would encourage the private sector to establish hospitals, highlighting growing interest that could elevate Fiji’s status in this field. Koya noted Fiji’s appeal as a destination for reconstructive surgery, where patients can enjoy the warm climate before returning home. He specifically mentioned cosmetic surgery as one of the most profitable segments of medical tourism.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka clarified that medical tourism extends beyond just hospitals and doctors, incorporating wellness components like spas, yoga camps, and mindfulness retreats. He stressed that for Fiji to become a premium medical tourism hub, the healthcare infrastructure must be improved for both tourists and residents.
Gavoka confirmed that the government is invested in upgrading healthcare facilities and has introduced incentives to attract private hospital investments. He mentioned that the medical investment package includes concessions and duty-free access for specific capital equipment and machinery. “We are dedicated to creating a comprehensive strategy to establish Fiji as a leading regional center for medical tourism,” Gavoka concluded.
