Fiji’s Medical Tourism: A Billion-Dollar Opportunity Awaits!

Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya has urged for the implementation of essential legislation to establish Fiji’s emerging medical tourism sector, which has the potential to evolve into a billion-dollar industry. During a supplementary inquiry regarding the developments in medical tourism in Fiji, Koya emphasized the need for legal frameworks to prevent any violations as the market expands.

Koya requested that the government create incentives for the private sector to invest in hospital establishments, suggesting that these interests could elevate Fiji’s status in the medical tourism arena. He pointed out that Fiji is an attractive destination for reconstructive surgery, allowing patients to enjoy the local climate before returning home. Furthermore, he noted that cosmetic surgery represents one of the most profitable segments of medical tourism.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka stressed that medical tourism encompasses more than just medical facilities; it includes various sectors such as health and wellness, where people travel for experiences like spas, yoga retreats, and mindfulness programs. Gavoka asserted that for Fiji to establish itself as a premium medical tourism destination, it is crucial to strengthen health infrastructure for the benefit of both visitors and local residents.

Gavoka mentioned ongoing investments aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure in Fiji and highlighted government incentives designed to attract private hospital investments. He indicated that concessions and duty-free access to specific capital equipment are part of the medical investment package intended to encourage private sector participation in healthcare. “We are dedicated to developing a comprehensive strategy to position Fiji as a leading regional hub for medical tourism,” he concluded.
