The Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences is urging the Government to extend the approved overtime payments for Allied Health Band F positions within the Ministry of Health. Institute president Jignesh Sharma commended the ministry for initiating these payments but raised concerns about the limited duration of six months, as detailed in an internal circular (number 17/2024) from the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu.
Sharma highlighted that the circular indicates the approved overtime payments would be effective from November 7, 2024, but only for six months. He expressed the need for a more enduring solution, suggesting that the continuation of these payments should be indefinite or at least until proper staffing levels can be achieved for essential shift work.
The current staffing situation in many sub-divisional laboratories is critical, with larger facilities operating with just three to four professionals and smaller labs having only one or two staff members. Sharma questioned why a temporary measure was being implemented for a crucial issue, proposing that a permanent solution would be more effective in preventing future challenges.
He emphasized the importance of resolving the issue of overtime payments in a sustainable manner, and ensuring that staffing levels match the facility’s operational needs to mitigate the profound impact on medical laboratory staff, particularly in sub-divisional areas.
This situation underscores the pressing need for the government to address staffing and overtime issues within the healthcare system. By taking decisive action, we can foster a more stable and effective healthcare environment, ultimately benefiting both medical professionals and the communities they serve.
In summary, the Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences is advocating for a longer-term solution to the overtime payment system, highlighting the need for adequate staffing to support effective healthcare delivery. Their call for action reflects a commitment to ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of medical laboratory services in Fiji.
