A twelve-member team from the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to leave for Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in relief efforts following recent challenges faced by the Pacific nation. During a farewell gathering, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, Permanent Secretary for Health, expressed gratitude to the team members for stepping up to represent Fiji in this crucial time.

Dr. Tudravu highlighted the significance of their mission, stating, “You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well.” He acknowledged the personal sacrifices the team members have made, as they leave behind their families to assist those in need.

FEMAT holds the distinction of being the first international Emergency Medical Team recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Pacific Islands, equipped to respond effectively to emergencies and disasters not just in Fiji, but throughout the region. The team’s efforts are supported by contributions from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ensuring they are self-sufficient during their deployment in times of crisis.

This deployment is particularly timely as FEMAT had previously aided Vanuatu in March 2023 after Tropical Cyclone Kevin and Cyclone Judy impacted the area.

The collective action of FEMAT not only highlights Fiji’s commitment to regional solidarity but also portrays a compassionate response to humanitarian needs across the Pacific. As they embark on this journey, the team embodies the spirit of unity and resilience, offering hope and support to fellow Pacific Islanders.

Summary: A twelve-member FEMAT team from Fiji will travel to Vanuatu to assist in relief efforts, representing both the Ministry of Health and Fiji itself. Dr. Tudravu acknowledged their sacrifices and emphasized the importance of their mission. FEMAT is the first WHO-verified team in the Pacific, having previously helped Vanuatu after recent cyclones. Their deployment underscores regional solidarity and compassion in times of crisis.
