A twelve-member team from the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu to aid in relief efforts following recent natural disasters. During a farewell event for the team, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, expressed gratitude for their commitment to represent Fiji while supporting their Pacific neighbors in need.
“You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well,” Dr. Tudravu remarked. He acknowledged the challenges the team faces, particularly the emotional strain of leaving loved ones to fulfill this important mission.
FEMAT stands out as the first World Health Organization-verified international Emergency Medical Team in the Pacific Islands, equipped to respond to emergencies and disasters both locally and regionally. With backing from the Australian and New Zealand governments, this self-sufficient group of health professionals is ready for deployment during crises.
Previously, the FEMAT provided crucial assistance to Vanuatu in March 2023 after the region was impacted by Cyclone Kevin and Cyclone Judy.
The dedication of the FEMAT team to serve during times of crisis exemplifies the spirit of solidarity among Pacific nations, showcasing the commitment to provide support to those affected by disasters. Their journey not only highlights the importance of international cooperation but also the resilience of communities coming together in the face of adversity.
