Fiji’s Maritime Security Focuses on Women’s Empowerment

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration is currently consulting on Fiji’s inaugural Women Peace and Security National Action Plan, according to British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones. During his address at the Maritime Security Committee Conference, Dr. Jones highlighted that this plan aims to make maritime spaces safe and equitable for everyone.

He noted that British Navy ships, including offshore patrol vessels that have been active in the region, will lead the way in providing separate quarters for female and male officers. Dr. Jones expressed that this initiative will create a safer and more comfortable environment for both military personnel and civilians who find themselves in non-traditional settings.

In addition, Munkhtuya Altangerel, the UNDP’s resident representative for the Pacific office, underscored the significance of the ocean. she stated, “The ocean still beats as the lifeblood of our communities. It is not merely a feature on a map; it serves as the compass of our Pacific identity.” She also pointed out how utilizing local knowledge can significantly bolster community maritime security efforts.

The two-day conference aims to foster collaboration and explore opportunities to preserve and protect maritime areas for future generations.
