The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration held a conference for the Maritime Security Committee to address safety and security concerns at Fiji’s borders.
This two-day event, backed by the Government of the United Kingdom and the UNDP, gathered key maritime security stakeholders and academics from King’s College London. Discussions revolved around the protection of Fiji’s seaports and borders, as well as the broader Blue Pacific region.
The conference emphasized the unique challenges of safeguarding Fiji’s expansive maritime territory, while also reflecting on the rich maritime heritage that has influenced the nation and the Pacific region for centuries.
Additionally, the event highlighted the importance of collaboration between King’s College and the Maritime Security Committee in enhancing maritime policy, legislative measures, and strategic insights necessary for the protection of the Blue Pacific through established partnerships.
During the opening of the conference, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua proposed the creation of an Oceanic Alliance for the Security of Island States, or “OASIS.” He envisions this alliance as a formal platform to collectively tackle security issues, including transnational organized crime, climate change, and illegal fishing practices.
Minister Tikoduadua emphasized the need for unity among Pacific Island States, stating that collaboration is essential for raising their voices and securing a shared future. He described OASIS as an important step towards protecting maritime areas from increasing external threats.
The workshop aimed to foster cooperation among various agencies and explore ways to preserve and safeguard maritime regions for the benefit of current and future generations.
British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones, remarked that maritime security extends beyond the ocean’s surface, encompassing the sub-sea environment and the communication cables that traverse the seabed. He noted the complexities of maintaining security in such a challenging environment, stressing the importance of deep determination and high ambition.
