The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has issued a strong warning against overcrowding on vessels, particularly as the festive season approaches and many people plan to travel to remote islands to celebrate Christmas with loved ones. Chief Executive Officer Joeli Cawaki emphasized that such dangerous practices will not be tolerated.
Cawaki stated that vessel owners who overload passengers and cargo will face serious repercussions. He noted that MSAF regularly observes instances of overcapacity during this time of year and highlighted their protocol involving a service certificate that specifies the maximum number of passengers a vessel can legally carry. If this limit is exceeded, MSAF officials stationed at the jetty have the authority to halt the vessel from departing.
To enhance compliance and safeguard public safety, MSAF will increase its surveillance at jetties during the busy holiday season. Cawaki mentioned that they will rigorously monitor vessel activity, which may include counting passengers and cross-referencing the manifest with the shipowner’s records to ensure that both passenger and cargo limits are adhered to.
This proactive approach reflects MSAF’s commitment to maritime safety, especially during periods of heightened travel. By reinforcing regulations and increasing their presence, they aim to prevent tragedies that could arise from overcrowding.
The focus on safety during this festive period is a vital step that not only prioritizes the well-being of travelers but also ensures that families can enjoy their celebrations without the worry of unsafe travel conditions. Overall, this effort highlights the importance of compliance with safety regulations in fostering a secure and enjoyable holiday experience for all.
