Fiji’s Mahogany Industry Undergoes Major Legislative Review

The Cabinet has given its approval to review the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica stated that MIDA 2010 created the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 outlines the licensing and branding requirements for Fiji’s mahogany.

Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, has recommended revising these laws to address challenges faced by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The anticipated review of MIDA 2010 and MILBA 2011 aims to assess the Mahogany Industry Council’s functions and facilitate the growth of the mahogany industry, as well as enhance the recognition of the quality of Fiji’s hardwood products on both domestic and international markets.
