Fiji’s Mahogany Industry Set for Major Legislative Overhaul

The Cabinet has officially approved a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica noted that MIDA 2010 established the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 addresses the licensing and branding requirements related to Fiji Mahogany.

Kamikamica mentioned that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, has recommended this legislative review to tackle challenges faced by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The examination of MIDA 2010 and MILBA 2011 aims to assess the role of the Mahogany Industry Council and to promote further growth in the mahogany industry, as well as to enhance the recognition of Fiji’s hardwood products both domestically and internationally.
